Steel City Invitational
Friday February 17th the Carolina Lady Eagles and some family members boarded the Eagles bus in route to Pittsburgh for a Presidents' day weekend tournament. The bus arrived at the hotel around midnight after the 10 hour ride packed with homework, naps, and movies. Saturday morning the team faced off with the tournament hosts and new twitter friends, the Steel City Selects. In a very close and evenly matched game the Eagles were only able to get in one goal while the Selects girls squeezed in two. With a close 2-1 loss, the Carolina group headed out for some lunch and down time at the hotel in preparation for game number two.
Game two was a must win for the Eagle team to have a spot in the semis. In a physical match up with the Syracuse Blazers the girls got the job done. It was a kind of bizarre game as some unusual penalties were assessed. The Carolina Eagles held on to a 4-3 win in the crazy game. Unfortunately, defenseman Kali Crawley was tripped up and concussed during the win. That evening after heading out to dinner the team had a surprise birthday party to celebrate the upcoming birthdays of Naomi Nice, Mya Luna, and Mackenzie Shulmistra.
Sunday morning the Carolina Eagles needed a win, a big one would get the goal differential that the team needed to earn a spot in the semis no matter who won the other game going on in the pool. That is just what the girls did. A 10-1 win against the Lady Sabrehawks propelled the ladies into a semi final rematch with the Steel City Selects. But the win was not all good as defenseman Cassie Vorderbrug crashed into the boards and broke her arm. A now short handed Carolina squad headed into the semi round looking to avenge their first game loss.
Not only was Sunday afternoon a crucial semi-final but it was also one of 38 games that made up a continuous global girls hockey game. The game was part of World Girls' Ice Hockey Weekend, which is a global effort to recognize and celebrate girls' hockey. It was an honor to participate and a cool experience to have the game shared by the IIHF and USA Hockey. In a really tight and exhausting game the Eagles girls fell just short with another 2-1 loss to the hometown team.
The team went downtown for dinner and the Incline before heading home Monday for school before league playoffs the following weekend. We wish Cassie and Kali a speedy recovery.
